Brooklyn Design Spotlight: Daskam and Dworkis

As we all know, Brooklyn is filled with all kinds of creative businesses.  This month’s spotlight focuses on Brooklyn design firm Daskam and Dworkis in Greenpoint, run by Josh Dworkis and Tomas Daskam.

A quick visit to their website gives you an easy idea of what they do - attractive cabinetry, lighting, and restaurant interiors are among their products, and have a modern and unique feel to them and are influenced by Don Judd, George Nakashima and Jean Michel Frank.

I was able to snag a quick interview via email with Josh:

How long have you been in business?

Since we were kids.

Have you always been in Brooklyn?

No, I moved here in 1992.

What do you like about owning a business in Brooklyn?

Small business is supported by the people of Brooklyn.

How did you guys get into this line of work?

My mother kicked my brother and I out of the house when we were kids and said that we should go wash windows or something.  Isn’t it the same with everyone?

How did you wind up forming a partnership?

We work well together.  We both are interested in art and design as well as crafts and construction.

What would you call what you do?  High-end wood-working?

It’s a combination of design and crafts: wood, plaster, stone, glass, fabric, paint, paper…

What is your clientele like?

Really interesting and nice people - for the most part ;-)

What advice would you give to an entrepreneur trying to start a small business in Brooklyn?

Ask questions!

You can contact Josh Dworkis or Tomas Daskam through their website.
