Top Five Favorite Food Spots (so far)

Okee dokee folks. So here I am checking out Sunset Park, trying out different restaurants and bars, dragging friends from places like Clinton Hill and Chelsea (”Why can’t we just make some tacos and drink here?”, “Because it’s better, we’re not talking Old El Paso taco mix here, dumbass”). Anyway, this is what I’ve found to be my faves so far.

1) Maria’s Bistro Mexicano That looks expensive! you might say at first glance at the menu oustide. Yes, but they have good specials. And a full bar. And the restaurant has all this exposed brick and Gasp! a patio. They also have a Guacamole Station. But my favorite…$10 brunch with unlimited mimosas, Bloody Marias, champagne. *I sit back in satisfaction*

Eclipse

2) Eclipse Mexican and American Restaurant I’m going to pretend that my favorite thing about this place IS NOT the $11 bucket o’ five beers special (decent beer too!). The patio is nice, get in a few more dining al fresco days before it’s too late. And they have a wide variety of food including a lot of (labeled) vegetarian food.

Fabio\'s

3) Fabio’s Tropical Ices Well, hot diggity dog, I’ve found a real gem (I know I’m not the first. calm down…)! All they sell here are ices. Is ice. Whatever. They make everything, and it’s delicious. The first time I went, I tried a small cup ($1.75) of pineapple on the bottom (a bit too sweet) and coconut on top with a sprinkling of cinnamon. Holy hair! Coconut ice is so good! I walked out eyeing the sweet corn ice, and coming back to order it a few weeks later, was told it was out of season. “We’ll have it next year, pray God, in the summer”, said the woman scooping my half blueberry, half coconut cup. I agree. Pray we have it next year.

4)Tacos Matamoros I don’t care what anyone else says about how this place is too hyped yadda yadda yadda yadda. Directions: Go on Saturday afternoon. Stop at store for a couple of beers on the way, unless you don’t want beer which is fine because they have the BEST horchata. Order chorizo, al pastor, lengua, carne asada, tripas. Eat, drink and be merry.

(totally forgot to take a pic of the Ba Xuyen or Lucky Eight, this lovely picture of the park will have to do)

5) Ba Xuyen I heard they had the best Bahn Mi in the city. In I go after a lovely walk through Sunset Park. It’s roomy in there, and bright, and right next to Arnold’s bike shop. It’s always good to be near a bike shop. Anyway, I ordered a meatball sandwich for $3.75. They bread was flaky, crunchy without being that overly-crunchy-cut-your-mouth kind of way and soft without being that I-hate-the-food-in-America kind of way. The meatballs flavorful and moist and plenty of toppings. I did ask for it spicy though, and the cook asked me if I was sure twice, and I said yes - but it still wasn’t that spicy. Do they really think all Americans can’t stand spicy food? Regardless, a delicious sandwich and a good place to drag someone who claims to not like to try new kinds of food.

5) Lucky 8 Restaurant Once we got over our self-imposed awkwardness at being the only white people in there, we settled in to figure out what in the hey we should order. I have to be honest. I’m not entirely sure what we got besides the crackling roast pig (delicious!) and some sauteed bok choy (how nice!). We thought we ordered one thing and out comes another. I don’t know what it was, may have been some kind of brain. But it was good. Clean, efficient, inexpensive, authentic Chinese food.
