Top 5 Food Finds near Industry City
So you’re thinking about moving your business to Industry City? What are you going to do about breakfast, lunch, when you’re staying late at the office? I took a walk to find the tastiest, most affordable restaurants between the 36th Street subway station and your office. Found something else you like? Post it in Comments and let everyone know.
****It should be noted that all of these restaurants, as well as most on the Sunset Park/Industry City Map offer free delivery, so from as far away as 58th Street and 5th Avenue.****

First up we’ve got Cheung Sing Chinese Restaurant , right as you come up out of the station at the NW exit (You remembered to ride in the front of the train, right?). I walked in to find a very friendly woman manning the counter at about 9 am. I could see a variety of fresh pastry/bread-like things and asked her which one was best. I’m not sure she understood me, but she pointed at one and said, “Pineapple” and pointed another, declaring “Ham and egg”. I chose the ham and egg and bit into a fresh, lightly sweetened pastry filled with egg, a decent slice of ham and a light white sauce, which sent me back a mean $0.70. Yes, seventy cents. I haven’t yet tried the lunch, but it’s cheap and looks like it could hit the spot.

Next door is Ines Bakery, open 24 hours. In I saunter, feeling pretty good about my so far seventy cent breakfast. This is a place where 2 eggs, bacon, home fries, toast, coffee, and juice will cost you $3. Mexican Eggs cost $5, I’m not sure why. They do come with beans, but judging from the pricing pattern, there has to be some other kind of delicious reason. For lunch, they’ve got papusas, tacos, tortas, and cemitas all for under $5, and often much less. Like a lot of Mexican places, they’ve offer a lot of different kinds of beverages, from batidas (shakes) to fresh-squeezed juices, sodas - including my favorites Jarritos and Mexican Coke. I try to eat in line with the type of cuisine a restaurant specializes in, but it should be noted a cheeseburger deluxe with fries and a soda is $4 here. Lest we forget it’s a bakery, the pink Mexican sweet bread and the Tres Leches are delicious, as I’m sure they all are.

My walk turns into a roll as I head towards Spiro’s Cafe & Pizza a little further down the block towards 35th street. They have EVERYTHING. Don’t be afraid of their horrible decor. And it is horrible. But the food is good, clean, and inexpensive. Strawberry pancakes or avocado, mushroom, and cheddar omelette? Neither, because I’m really full. But on another day, they’re both good. Their lunch menu is extensive and comes with rave reviews from customers. Lighter eaters relax: salads abound, as do wraps such as the Cobb or the Chicken Caeser. They also have burgers, sandwiches, tacos, gyros, calzones and pizza. It’s a lot, but people seem to really love the food, and what I suspect happened is that the owner is Greek and eventually got more and more latino employees and customers and adjusted accordingly. Next on my list to try - the buffalo wings.

Down the hill in Industry City is Hero Champ , on the corner of 36th and 4th Ave. Breakfasts include omelettes, pancakes, cereal, fresh fruit, and house-baked muffins, danishes, and croissants, all for under $4. As the name suggests, they’ve numerous sandwiches to choose from, all under $4.50. Homemade soups, salads, wraps, and hot platters such as Eggplant Parmigiana are also available. Plenty of seating.

Across the street is Cafe Morena, offering a similar mix of Spanish and American food as some of the other establishments, but what I noticed was printed on the menu is each day of the week Monday through Friday. Under each day is a list of 15 or so specialties, changing each day, but consistent. For example, Lasagna is always offered on Friday and Roast Chicken on Thursday. A good thing to remember when you’re getting sick of turkey sandwiches or Greek salads. Stop in and pick up a menu.

***Honorable Mention***
Tucked in between 3rd and 4th Avenues on 34th street is Royal Cuisine, a cute Chinese place with your standard fare. Seems to be prepared better than most takeout places, and also has shakes, ices, smoothies, and bubble tea. Eat in or takeout, it’s better looking in there than you would think.
Check out our Sunset Park are map for restaurant addresses, descriptions and phone numbers. I’ll continue to update it as I eat my way through the neighborhood.
